Before my last vacation, I was looking for a less expensive device than the iPod to bring my mp3 collection with me. My research led me to the Sony D-NE510. With only some minor complaints, I've been very happy with my purchase.

This Walkman allows you to listen to standard audio CDs, MP3 CDs, or ATRAC3 CDs (which can be created using the bundled software, SonicStage Simple Burner). Being a bit of an audiophile, I always use the highest sampling rate (132 Kbps) when creating ATRAC CDs. Though this consumes more disk space, I can still get well over 100 songs onto a CD! Even at 132 Kbps, I was able to put most of my MP3 library onto 5 CDs - more than enough for my trip.

The design is sleek but not the most ergonomic; some of the buttons are slightly difficult to view and/or access (particulary the volume and bass booster). The bass boost button is called simply "Sound" - why? Some have noted that the unit beeps when paused, a minor complaint (although there are instructions for disabling the beep). Finally, note that this particular Walkman might not be conducive to listening to audio books; I haven't tried it, so check the other reviews here if that's a consideration for you.

The included headphones are actually pretty good. The unit is lightweight and portable. It uses batteries (2 AA) very efficiently.

If you're looking for a nice Walkman to play audio and mp3 CDs, I recommend the Sony D-NE510. It give you bang for the buck and upholds Sony's place as a leader in consumer audio products.

The box says "for iPod" all over it, and even says the docking station charges iPods-- it does not say anywhere that the dock is for other players. There is one bubble that says there is an aux input for other players, including the pictured Barbie player (and believe me, it's a very tiny picture). Other devices will not dock with this product. It does not claim anywhere that other, non-iPod devices are dockable. I don't know how much more clear the packaging could be about this.

That said, it was easy to get out of the box, plug it in, and start using it. There are several trays included so that your player will fit comfortably, including a couple for non-iPods that do not dock with it. Find the tray that best cradles your device, and snap it in. Then plug it in, put in your iPod, and turn it on. The buttons are all pretty straightforward, and I imagine you'd have no trouble with the clock or the alarm.

While the sound is not of stereo quality, it does pump up the volume exactly like I need with my hearing issues. There's a radio on it in addition to the iPod dock, and it works like most any clock radio would. It's constructed so that the iPod sits at a near-perfect 90 degree angle, which is probably OK for bedside use. I'm using this in another area, and this would have been better for me if it tilted back a couple of degrees.

This is perfect for a child, as well as a nice addition to "the Barbie room" for you collectors out there. It looks really cute with my doll collection, and plays my movies and music while I'm in there moving things around or showing off my plastic girls. Great or kids-- and the kid in you.

Perhaps I was just lucky and got one of these that performed better than the ones that the other reviewers got. But this truly has been the best portable CD player that I have owned to date.

I use rechargable NiMH batteries, so battery life for me was long enough to get about 6-10 hours of use out of this player.

The anti-skip is very effective, I don't think I've ever heard a disc skip while using this player, even some of my more scratched ones.

XBS is fantastic, the sound is rich and full and natural, comparable to Panasonic's SL-SX480, but with MUCH better skip protection on this model than the Panasonic model.

Not to mention the overall look of the player is really quite nice, and it's built like a tank. Yes, it's heavy, but it's durable. In fact, it has been dropped by me on hard pavement about 10 times now, and it just BARELY quit working as a result. I bet your standard Sony wouldnt survive that many hard impacts.

I was quite disappointed to have to buy a replacement CD player to this one because I'd dropped it one too many times. This was a wonderful player and none of the replacements that I have tried so far have been able to match its quality and anti skip protection. A really good model from Phillips.

The only cons I have are as follows:

the CD player does not remember your previous volume setting unless you change discs immediately. If you turn it off or allow it to turn off, you lose your volume setting. No big deal however.

"BEEP" is turned "on" by default. Each time that you power-on the CD player, you must turn off the "BEEP" function or else you'll hear a beep each time you press any button on the player. I think BEEP is a rather useless feature and a pain to turn off each time you want to play a disc.

Battery hog: I am aware that I would probably have gotten two or three days of battery use out of a comparable CD player on the market. This one gives you about 6-10 hours on a NiMH battery. On an alkaline I can only imagine it'd deliver about half that. So yeah, it is a battery hog. But it's still a good player. Invest in recharable batteries, they'll save you a lot of money in the long run.

I don't know why the previous reviewers had so many problems with theirs, but mine served me well, and no replacement I've tried so far has matched it.

In reference to the below feedback, the user either had a bad unit or did not know how to use the player (reading the manual before using is a must). I previously used the SoulPlayer portable mp3 player and was 100 percent satisfied with it. After over 3 years of daily use it bit the dust. I was forced to look for another brand as SoulPlayer no longer manufactured a disc type MP3 player. I decided on the Sony, mainly by name recognition. I am glad I did. Sound quality is excellent with many user defined EQ settings. The display is a little small but does show everything you would need to know: Album name, Artist name, song title, etc. You can flip through the different setting to show the bit rate of the MP3, time left, etc. Actually, there are more settings then most people would use but for my money, more is better than less! Oh, and it only uses 1 AA battery which seems to last forever. Use rechargeables and forget it. Highly recommended for people looking for a disc type MP3 player.

I bought two of these from eBay a few years back - one for me, and one for my now-fiancé. I was obsessed with its "small is the new small" style, and I loved its globular, from-the-not-so-distant-future look.

Was I impressed with it? Yes. Am I still? See previous answer. According to the manufacture date, this sexy little number will be five years old this September, and it has yet to cheese me off.

True, it's not a battery conservationist's dream - what high-drain one-battery device manufactured in 2001 is? In the not-so-distant future, I charge two NiMHs, use one, and keep the spare in my pocket. Come on, folks - it only uses ONE BATTERY!

True, it's more than twice the size of my Rio Chiba Urban, which I also adore. But I don't have fifty SD cards, nor do I have the time to write and rewrite to the few that I have. I do, however, have fifty 88-cent 8cm CDRWs, and it takes a heck of a lot less time to write a 192MB CD than it does to transfer 128MB over USB 1.1 - not only that, but the player doesn't need to be anywhere near the computer, sucking batteries, while I'm doing it.

True, it doesn't display song/artist/album information. Neither does the iPod Shuffle, and rich brats are all over those things like a fat cat on a bag of Meow Mix. Besides, you made the CD; you know what's on it. Element of surprise, and all that.

True, it's slightly cheap and plastic-feeling. Here's a news flash from the not-so-distant future, kids: consumer electronics these days are rarely made with an eye for craftsmanship. Both of our units look only slightly worn after years of use, and they have that kind of stylistic "je ne sais quoi" that will have our descendants praising it as we do the Phonospheres of yore.

So yes, it has served me well over the years. It's a shame it's no longer made, to my knowledge. Actually, come to think of it, maybe it's a good thing - I'm the only one (besides my fiancé) who has one, and its kooky kitsch potential will ensure its collectibility in the not-so-distant future.

Philips's EXP401 8 cm CD player is indeed small, measuring a mere 3.5 by 4.5 inches (though it does seem a little thick at 1.25 inches). Since the trays or spindles in most standard CD and DVD players accommodate 3-inchers, and since few commercial baby CDs have seen release outside Japan (where the format continues to thrive), the incentive for investing in a dedicated 8 cm CD player surely isn't prerecorded music. And that's OK, because Philips just might be onto something here.

Using recordable 8 cm CDs and MP3 or AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) compression, one disc can hold more than three hours of music (compared with only 21 or so minutes of CD-quality PCM audio). No encoding software comes with the player, and, of course, you'll need a CD burner to take full advantage of the portability and extended playback. But, properly equipped, the EXP401 is a fun and worthy entry in the MP3-CD field, excelling both ergonomically and sonically.

The player lets you access digital-music files individually or in user-designated folders (called "albums"), simplifying the process of sorting through the 30 to 50 tracks you might end up with on each of your discs. It'll also play "mixed-mode" CDs--that is, discs bearing both linear PCM (CD) and MP3/AAC audio data--but doing so requires manual switching between PCM and MP3 modes.

Philips boasts nearly two minutes of "Magic" electronic skip protection (ESP), and, supernatural or not, we were unable to induce interruptions in our tunes shy of stopping playback or skipping to another track.

In our tests, we were impressed with the player's sound quality (through good headphones), with the player exhibiting ample amplifier power and pleasing, effortless sound from known CD sources. Compressed-audio files vary in their fidelity, of course, but Philips seems to have nailed the analog end of things with a quality headphone jack and volume control. The digital dynamic bass boost is actually useful, with level 1 offering a refreshing boost in the bass only and level 2 jacking the low end even further and introducing a little extra treble as well.

We strongly recommend using a better-sounding, more comfortable set of headphones than the included ear buds. As long as you stick with .125-inch minijack headphones, compatibility with the handy clip-on remote control won't be an issue.

Included in the box are the EXP401, a user's manual, one blank 8 cm CD-R, a limited-function clip-on wired remote control, a pair of ear-bud headphones, and an AC adapter. The EXP401 runs on a single AA battery (not included), from which it derives about three hours of playing time for an MP3-CD with electronic shock protection on (five hours with ESP off), and six hours for standard CD audio (with EPS on or off).

Supported bit rates: MP3: 32 to 320 kbps; AAC: less than or equal to 160 kbps. Total number of music files and albums: around 350 (with a typical file name length of 20 characters). The number of music files that can be played depends on the length of the names, but given the relatively limited storage capacity of the 8 cm discs, this shouldn't pose a problem. --Michael Mikesell

It rolls upgradable firmware, eight-minute antishock protection, ASF (Advanced Streaming Format) and WMA (Windows Media Audio) compatibility, ID3 tag support, and the ability to play standard audio CDs, MP3-encoded discs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs into an ultratrim (0.6 inches thick) player. And the sound is deluxe, delivering crisp highs, discernible mids, and bass thick enough to make low-end aficionados nod their heads in approval.

Since we had yet to fully investigate WMA, we felt compelled to dig into the format. At first we were hesitant: how could WMA compress music files to half their size--at, say, 64 Kbps--and still sound good? After dumping an entire, 100-song playlist onto a single CD-R, however, we were humbled. The procedure was painless, and the sound was incredible. The iRiver SlimX completely fulfilled our demands; using the gorgeous inline remote, we easily skipped ahead 10 tracks at a time, used fast-scan to hear a particular verse, and made a customized playlist on the fly.

In fact, the remote lets you operate every function (save changing a disc) without having to dig the unit out of your backpack or its carrying case (included, but frail), and it also includes a hold switch that prevents accidental playback.

After the WMA-disc success, we switched over to an MP3 compilation made by a friend. While reading the different ID3 tags (MP3 file markers that feed song, artist, and album names to your player), we first played the songs whose titles intrigued us most, like "Nannari to Naru Deshou" by the excellent Japanese female duo Puffy. That's why ID3 tags are so cool--they allow you to search by name, not track number.

Next, we took the SlimX out on a long walk to judge its portability. Unless we made silly, Pete Townshend-style windmill movements, each disc played satisfactorily. We noticed that standard audio CDs popped more than anything we burned off the Web, which was strange. We also sampled the five equalizer presets, although we noticed only subtle differences in sound at low volumes.

While listening to any Web-audio disc, the SlimX fills up its antiskip buffer with the eight minutes of music. Essentially, this means the player doesn't have to read the disc as much, which results in prolonged battery life, and ultimately the SlimX delivered on its promise of up to 23 hours playing time. To get these results for yourself, just make sure the two flat NiMH batteries are fully charged, and pop an extra pair of AAs into the external battery pod. It's that easy.

For those new to ASF, MP3, and WMA formats, you may be disappointed by the SlimX's user's manual, which is skimpy at best. Our Guide to Making MP3 Files will familiarize you with the basics and help you turn your computer into a virtual jukebox.

I've had my mp70 for just over two years, and love it. I listen to mp3s recorded at 256, using Grado sr80 headphones. The sound is excellent. With the Grado's I find a volume level of 5 to 8 to be fine. I've also used it with a pair of Panasonic RP-HG17 headphones, and usually need to crank it up a bit more for them.

One of the things I love about the mp70 is the built-in charger -- I've been using the same set of ni-cad batteries daily for almost 3 years. I noticed in the instructions that the diagram for the Panasonic ni-cads (P-3GAVA/2B) showed a small, clear strip on the negative end (-) of the cell. A quick peek at the battery compartment showed a small sense wire at the bottom of one of the cell slots. Since I couldn't find the Panasonic cells, I decided to just give it a try. I went to Radio Shack and picked up a couple ni-cads and and AC adapter (I brought the player in and they quickly found the correct plug). The total was for the adapter/plug (#273-1760) and .50 for the ni-cads (#23-149). At home I took out my pocket knife and stripped about 4mm of the label off the negative end of each cell, so that the metal case showed. I popped them into the player, plugged in the adapter, and sure enough, "CHARGE" started blinking on the display. I use the unit about 5 - 6 hours a day (either playing or in pause), and have to charge it 2 - 3 times a week (this has crept up over the last year; I think the time has arrived for new ni-cads. Two years of daily use has taken a toll.). The unit takes about 2 hours to charge, and you know it's done when the "CHARGE" message disappears. This is rarely ever a hassle as I usually plug it in when I leave work (when I notice the batteries are low) and it's ready when I get in the next day. Note that once or twice a month I also let it run till it dies to keep the batteries conditioned. Also note that since the internal charger is designed for ni-cads, nimh cells may not work as well (they have a different charge profile).

What's nice about this whole setup is I can rip six+ albums onto a disc for work without bringing in all my cds (which have been known to wander). If I "loose" a cd, no big deal, I just burn another image onto a 19 cent CD-R (interestingly enough, this hasn't happened since I started bringing in my CD-R's. I guess my cheap discs covered in Sharpie notes aren't as appealing). I also find this system to be much more manageable than sticking 5000 songs on one mp3 player. I have my "lyle lovett" disc, my "jill sobule" / "audioslave" disc, etc. These discs also work in the Alpine in my Jeep, so I just slip what I'm listening to in my sachel for the drive home.

Getting back the mp70 itself, the display is great too, far superior to other units in the same (or greater) price range. I tag all my songs with id3 information, so the title/artist pops right up (I use either grip or sonia to rip my cds). This is alot nicer than just seeing the file name. The display is large enough that I can read it from a reasonable distance too. On flights I can sit it on the floor of the plane by my foot and still read the titles.

Overall I have totally enjoyed my mp70 over the past 2+ years and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unit like this. I would have given it 5 stars except for the EQ settings, which are very uneven. Part of this is personal preference though, and that said, the unit still sounds cleaner and more open than my office pc. If Panasonic had given it user adjustable tone/eq settings, this product would be perfect. Of course then I probably wouldn't have found it on sale for either. Such is life.

This player remembers exactly where it was when turned off, making it an excellent choice for books on CD. Interestingly, this works perfectly when the car power adapter is plugged into a switched accessory (cigarette) outlet; even though the player has a battery, the loss of power on the adapter makes it shut off anyway. This eliminates fiddling at your destination - just switch off the ignition. It starts where you left off when you turn it back on.

I generally burn books as MP3 tracks of 3 min each with about 10 tracks per directory. Using the 'prev/next track' control allows you to skip by 3 min while 'prev/next group' skips by 30 min. This is a simple one-hand-no-visuals-required operation, completely different than an iPod that requires eyeballing the little screen. The control is very simple, rugged, and intuitive - it has little beep cues through the audio to tell you what's up when you diddle it. This is identical in start/stop capability and control to most of Sony's MP3/ATRAC CD and flash players. Even large books over 25 hours will easily fit on a single CD when encoded as MP3.

Sound quality is quite good for music and handles books on CD with ease.

I really like this sony CD player (with AM/FM/TV/Weather). The functions and buttons are well placed and easy to use. Even though I love my Sony NW-HD3 20GB MP3 player, when I listen to my beloved classical music collection, I still much prefer CDs, since when it comes to sound quality, MP3 simply cannot match the original CD recording. So it's simply easier to listen to the CDs direcly, and this lightweight, stylish, easy-to-use CD player is just PERFECT for that. And it runs for days on a single AA battery. (Hint: get Panasonic's new Oxyride AA batteries for double the life of even the best alkalines.)

I just love this portable CD player. If you are also an audiophile or an audiobook lover, this is perfect for your needs.

The only minor gripe is the player doesn't support WMA, which would have been even more fantastic for ripped audiobooks (better quality, smaller files). MP3 still takes too much space at the usual 128kbps bitrate. If I were to rip, I'd want to rip into 48kbps WMA and would still get great sound quality. (But I don't have the patience to rip anyway...)

BTW, this player (and the black version) are actually cheaper on Sony's consumer website, sonystyle dot com, where it sells for .95. I should have checked there first.

UPDATE: I was happy to discover that the inline remote control that comes with the D-NE320 also works on my Sony NW-HD3 20GB MP3 player. Awesome!

The sound is good (nice bass), the headphones it comes with are good (although I use earbuds purchased elsewhere) and the price is reasonable. BUT, they redesigned this model from the previous one I had and put the battery compartment in a tough spot. The flipped-open cover gets in the way of your fingers as you try to pry the two double-A batteries from inside. But, it's manageable. They also redesigned the display which is harder to read than the one on the old model. All in all, worth the money though.

I've had this CD player for a year and it works great. ATRAC3 is great - the sound is great and I can fit around 20 regular CDs onto one Atrac3 disc. The down side is the software. The first time I used it, it crashed, and it can take 2-3 hours to make one CD, be it from CDs or an MP3 collection, and some tracks don't write - and you don't find out until AFTER writing the CD. I didn't like how only MP3s can be converted to ATRAC3, as I have several WMAs. The software is frustrating because of the crashing and not writing tracks. If ATRAC3 doesn't interest you, this CD player can also play MP3 CDs and regular CDs too.

The CD player itself is great. It has a long battery life. One set of batteries lasted through a two-week vacation with constant play and more (and 3 ATRAC3 CDs was much lighter than a giant case with all my music). I've dropped it and it continues playing and doesn't skip. The sound isn't as loud as other players, but I don't like to damage my ears so it's fine for me.

The CD player is great and I reccommend it, but Sony needs to improve their SonicStage software. Otherwise, this is a good purchase.

First of all, there is one word to describe the sound quality..........heh I can't think of any, thats how good it is.
Basically after trading in a previous defective Panasonic CD Player, and seeing as though I have millions of mp3s on discs, I realised an MP3 CD player was what I had needed.
After purchasing this for, wait for it...£100! I was satisfied.
Meaning, there was a lot a "Pro's" to this player, but just one (maybe three) BIG (and I express the word 'big') flaw/downside which balances it out.

- Remote Control (However there is no need for this,
because after all, this is supposed to
be a "Sports CD Player")

CON'S: - =BIG...Player= (As soon as I held it in my hand, I thought of one word "BRICK", it was heavy...and as a frequent user of CD Players while walking, I couldn't fit it in any of my...pockets!)

suitable for every head out there! The damn
earplugs are too big, larger than ususal,

However as soon as you turn this thing on, and bust out the hip hop, r&b, rock whatever music you listen to... you forget about all it's negatives, it made me get off my seat and breakdance out on tha street, 4realz!
